You are currently viewing Biomaterials research at FTM presented by young researchers at the Twentieth Young Researchers’ Conference – Materials Science and Engineering

This year the Young Researchers’ Conference on Materials Science and Engineering celebrates the 20th anniversary. Since the inauguration in 2002, the Conference gathers each year master, doctoral and post-doctoral students providing them with the opportunity to present their research results to fellow colleagues and exchange ideas and experiences in all areas of materials science and engineering. This year the presentations were divided into 7 sessions:

  • Biomaterials
  • Environmental Science
  • Materials for High‐Technology Applications
  • Nanostructured Materials
  • New Synthesis and Processing Methods
  • Theoretical Modelling of Materials
  • Materials for New Generation Solar Cells

FTM researchers in biomaterials engineering contributed significantly to the Biomaterials session with 5 presentations. In the first Biomaterials session two bachelor students presented their bachelor thesis research:

Jelena Stanisavljević: Synthesis and characterization of dental inserts based on calcium-phosphate, doped with magnesium, strontium and fluorine ions

Teodora Jakovljević: Mechanical properties and bioactivity of scaffolds based on calcium-phosphates doped with Mg2+, Sr2+ and F ions and coated with chitosan

Jelena and Teodora, bachelor students at FTM, gave presentations on their research on bioceramic biomaterials

In the next two Biomaterials sessions three FTM ESRs presented their doctoral research results:

Mia Milošević: Development of a physiologically relevant osteosarcoma model based on alginate scaffolds and perfusion bioreactor

Ivana Banićević: Cellular self-assembly in a 3D osteosarcoma culture model based on alginate scaffolds and perfusion bioreactor

Milena Stevanović: Bioactive hydroxyapatite/chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)/gentamicin composite coating electrodeposited on titanium

Mia, Ivana and Milena, ESRs at FTM, presented their doctoral research results

In addition, two ESRs from the University of Eastern Piedmont „Amedeo Avogadro“ visiting for 2 months the Biomedical Engineering Group at FTM, presented their research carried out at the home institution as well as during their stay in Belgrade:

Ksenia Menshikh: Osteosarcoma in vitro: a step-by-step approach

Alessandro Calogero Scalia: Cartilage regeneration: innovative molecules and systems to improve healing and counteract arthritis

Ksenia and Alessandro, ESRs from UPO, presenting their research on osteosarcoma culture models and cartilage tissue engineering, respectively

This year’s Conference was successfully carried out from November 30 till December 2 with 72 oral presentations provoking lively discussions and inputs to young researchers. We are looking forward to the next conference announced for the year 2023.
